The Best Sunrise Photo Spot In San Francisco / by John McAlester

The Location: Battery Spencer

Sunrise over Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay

Up above the Golden Gate Bridge, on the Marin County side is a WWII era bunker called Battery Spencer. These military installations are hidden all over the Marin Headlands above the Golden Gate and they can serve as some of the best places to get amazing views of San Francisco and the Pacific coast.

Battery Spencer provides amazing views of Alcatraz Island, The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, and Ocean Beach. This spot is accessible via a quarter mile walk along a wide footpath. There is a small parking lot at the base of the footpath. Get there early because the parking fills up fast.

Getting There

One trick about getting to Battery Spencer from the San Francisco side of the bridge is that the access road to the battery is one way. You will need to exit at Alexander Avenue, and then take a left at Bunker Road. Head through the tunnel and then take a left at McCullough Road. Continue through the roundabout to Conzelman Road and enjoy the views until you get to the Battery Spencer parking area.

The photos from this spot can be unreal. With the Golden Gate Bridge looming large in the foreground and all the sites of San Francisco Bay behind.
